About RO DBT
Radically Open Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (RO DBT) is a treatment designed for individuals with problems related to emotional and behavioural over-control. These individuals tend to take life and responsibilities seriously, set high personal standards, work hard, and frequently sacrifice personal needs to achieve desired goals or help others. When over-control coping becomes rigid and inflexible, it can interfere with connections with others and adapting to changing environmental circumstances, leading to emotional loneliness, mood difficulties, and other problems.
RO DBT treatment offers interventions designed to help these individuals relax rigid and inflexible control, increase openness to disconfirming feedback and new experiences, and increase social connectedness. It has been researched over the past 25 years for individuals with chronic depression, anorexia nervosa, and other hard-to-treat problems such as obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (Cini et al., 2018, Lynch et al., 2020).
About the Presentation
In this talk, Dr. Drake will spend 45 minutes providing a general overview of RO DBT treatment (including ways clients can access treatment and the modalities of treatment), the coping style that this treatment was developed for and how it develops, and the research behind the treatment. Dr. Drake will also describe common problems that the treatment targets, some of the skills (e.g., Radical Openness, self-enquiry) that are taught in the RO DBT skills class, and how these skills may benefit your client. The last 10-15 minutes of the talk, Dr. Drake will be available for a Q &A.
Objectives
The goal of this talk is to provide mental health clinicians with a brief overview of RO DBT. Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to do the following:
1.Define problems of overcontrol coping according to the four core deficits and the biosocial theory for overcontrol.
2.Describe the RO-DBT treatment hierarchy and modes of treatment.
3.Evaluate whether RO DBT might be a suitable treatment for their clients.
